A perfect day in Lake Louise? Sun is shining, hardly anyone around, and the rink still open for a couple more days before the warm weather rolls in. Sounds too good to be true, but this was exactly how my session with this family was!

This family found my website online and booked a family photo session at Lake Louise. The mother asked if we could get some shots on the ice as she used to be a figure skater, and her two teenage daughters are currently figure skaters. A family session with an activity? Sign me up! On the day of the session, I showed up in the afternoon to a quieter Lake Louise – anyone who has been here knows it’s pretty much always busy! The sun was out, with only a couple of clouds making the lighting more than ideal, and the mountains were in all their glory. It was the perfect day.

We started the session in the knee high snow, getting everyone comfortable in front of the camera, and allowing them to get to know me a little bit – instead of being just some stranger taking photos. 10 minutes or so afterwards, we headed to the rink where the fun started!

Did I mention it was the dads first time on ice? First time with skates on? I mean, it’s Lake Louise, you can’t really skip this opportunity. The girls went on the ice with such grace and skill, I was in awe. They twirled, jumped, and just skated around making it look so effortless. Their passion for the sport was clear as day. Then there was dad; needed a little help getting on the ice, and gliding around, but he was having so much fun with his family. So much laughter, a bit of wobbling, but mainly smiles – mom was right there with him enjoying every second. There is also some video evidence of this on my Instagram!

This wasn’t just a photo session, it was a family experience & activity. Documenting real emotions, and something that this family does together regularly. As a Banff family photographer, these are the moments with families that makes me love what I do so much. It doesn’t have to just be skating – we can set up so many different activities for your activity photo session; having a picnic, home session making food, painting, going to the park, and mostly anything else you can think of!

If you’re a family or a couple visiting Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Emerald Lake, or the surrounding areas and want some photos of you and your family doing an activity together-then just send me a message and we’ll sort something out that’s fitting for your family.
